CHARGE OF BETTING.
MINIMUM PENALTY.
ißt TELECJBAPH — PBESS ASSOCIATION.} AUCKLAND, This Day. At the Police Court, Thomas Dwyer was charged with having betted in a public place, viz., a. billiardroom. Counsel for defendant etated that his client kept a motor garage at Maeterton. He ■wae here on a visit, and had no intention of carrying on business as a bookmaker. Mr. Fraeer, S.M., said that as it did not appear that defendaut was carrying on systematic bookmaking for a long time he might inflict the minimum penalty, and imposed a line of £20, with costs. The one charge recorded convictions on two other charges, on condition that defendant kept clear of betting altogether, which condition defendant agreed to. A further charge against defendant of haviftg been one of those arreVted in connection with the recent raid was also -.taken by request. He had a betting book on him when arreeted. A fine of £1, with costs was inflicted.
