HALF A MILLION MINERS AT WORK
REVOLT AGAINST THE FEDERATION. SERIOUS COLLISIONS WITH THE POLICE. PUBLIC CONTROL OF MINES.
LONDON, 11th April. Half a million miners are now working again. The chief hitch "occurred in South Wales, where tho Miners' Federation conferred with enginemen, and urged them to resume. The enginemen refused, and the federation then issued a manifesto to its members. While not directing colliers to take the enginemen's places the federation does not places any difficulties in the way of colliery managers securing efficient men from the minere' ranks for this purpose. The revolt against the federation is spreading in South Lancashire. Crowds composed chiefly of youths and unmarried men, are visiting tho pits and compelling tho workers to cease. There have been several serious collisions with the police, who have made a number of baton charges. Twenty thousand men at Wigan who were anxious to work were forced to fetop it being feared that hooligans .would box the miners within tho pits. The owners at Reighton TyLdesley have reclosed the pita, believing that it _is unsafe to work them while tho miners are in their present destructive mood. In the House of Commons, a motion by Mr. L. G. Chiozza Money, Liberal member for Northante % East, demanding public control of coal mines and the establishment of a Power Commission, was counted out.
