THE ANTUCO. After a long passage of 45 days from Dunedin. the German barque Antuco arrived safely at Port Pirie, South Aubtrana, on the 29th March. The barque, which saved her second charter by two days, is now loading wheat for the United Kingdom or Europe. "WON BY A LENGTH." What mubt have been a closely contested and exciting race occurred over a courEe of nearly 150 miles between two barques, which arrived ac Melbourne simultaneously, late on a recent Friday night. The vessels in question were the Louisa Craig, from Whaugarei, and the Joseph Craig, from Kaipara Tfie barques sighted each other off Deal Island (Kent Group), which was exactly 148 miles from their destination— Melbourne. The conditions .were ideal for an ocean race, and both vessels crowded on the canvas. "Special interest hi the event lay in. the fact that for some time the Joseph Craig has disputed *he claim of the Louisa Craig to be the faster of the two. When the race commenced the Louisa Craig had a. lead of three miles. This vessel al&o probably had the advantage In the weights. She was only carrying 570,000 ft of white pine, whilst the Joseph Craig had aboard 600,000 ft of kauri and white pine. During the early part of the pace the Louisa Craig seemed (o be holding her own, but as soon as the Promontory was passed it was seen that the Joseph Craig waH gradually wiping oil the deficiency. The tune of entry at Port Phillip Heads was givea at 4.40 p.m. for both barques. At that stage the' Louisa Craig -had still a slight advantage. Bowling up theTiay in front of a 6tiff south-easterly breeze, the Joseph Craig finally drew level with the Louisa Craig. Then the struggle commenced in earnest, and the two captains kept their crews busy in getting the last ounce out of then* respective vessels. However, the Joseph Craig was nob to be denied, and inch by inch her bowsprit crept out in front of that of the Louisa Craig. Finally, when the wmnmgpost— the Gellibrand light— was passed, the verdict was: "Won by a length." The Mongolia, Moeraki, Maunganui, Wimmera, and Marama will probably be within wireless range of Wellington this evening. The Corinthic, which arrived at Hobart at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon from London, landed 165 passengers, and is bringing 492 to Wellington. • Mr. S. J. Munn, formerly second engineer of the Rosamond, has succeeded Mr. H. J. Kelly at. second engineer of the Flora. The U.S.S. Co. f s collier Whangape arrived in the stream yesterday at about 5 o'clock. The. vessel, which is from Newcastle, has about 3000 tons of coal and 30 ton* of timber to discharge here before leaving for Napier with a further 1500 tons of coal. Fine weather was experienced on the run across with the exception of a moderate gale on Saturday last. At 7 a.m. to-morrow the Union Company's steamer Haupiri should sail from Auckland for Wellington via East Coast bays. Yesterday afternoon shortly after 2 o'clock the Shaw-Savill steamer Kia Ora left Auckland for Wellington. She is due here tomorrow afternoon. Advice received states that the barque Rona has been chartered to load 600,000 ft of white pine timber at Auckland for Sydney. The Boseric, recently under charter to the A. and A. Line, left Port Chalmers yesterday at 12.40 p.m. for Newcastle. A wireless message received at the General Post Office la*f> night at 11 o'clock stated that the Marama, from Sydney to Auckland, expects to arrive at the latter port at 7.30 a.m. on Friday. The New Zealand Shipping Company's Remuera, at present in Lyttelton discharging, the balance of her Home cargo, is expected to leave about the end of the week for Bluff to commence loading. Calls at Timaru, Lyttelton, Napier, and Wellington are to foUow.
