Edmund John Walsh, grocer, aud John Vernon ljinley, telegraphist, appeared at the Magistrate's Court to-day, charged with conspiracy, by deceit, to defraud Eoss and Bradshaw and Scotl. and Martindale, Wellington, of sums of £34 and £50^ 10s on cortaiti batting transactions. Ifc_ is alleged that Binley arranged with Walbh to go to tho Wanganui races, leaving signed telegrams to tho firms mentioned, containing iho names of horse's likely to win »fc WaiUTfahui, tho telegrams to bo handed iti prior to tho time- of tho race. Walsh telegraphed tho winners to aii address in Blenheim. Binley watched Wanganui wires, and held back tho telegrams to tl^e firms named, erased tho horses' names, and substituted tho winning horse. Tho firms became suspicious, and ' made enquiries, a prosecution _ beii'g tho result. Inspeotor Ellison is appearing- for the police. Tho case is proceeding.
