A quarterly council meeting of the New Zealand Chess Association was held last evening at the office of the hon. see-3-etary, Mr. A. G. Fell, 9, King's Chum-, bers. Tho following delegates were present : —Messrs. Armstrong (Wanganui), Simm (Napier), Welton (South Wellington and Otago C.C.), James (Gisborno), Petherick (Wellington), Kelling (Auckland and Wellington Working Men's Clubs, and Timaru), W. E. Mason (Oamaru) Gyles, senr. (Wcrtport), and 101 l (Canterbury C.C.). Mr. Armstrong was voted to the chair. The inward correspondence received 'by ah-. 1 ell wae ac follows:— Mr. Kidd, the Napier hon. sec, wrote forwarding the Brilliancy Prize of the lecent conf£«f. (WOJi( WOJ i by Mr. H. H. James, of Wellington), and also the balance-sheet ot the congme. He added that his club would take twenty copies of the Wk shortly to be published in connection with the twenty-fifth Championship Cmgross of Now Zealand (which was hold at NaDlerN aDler during tho Christmae-Xew \ear holidays). Mes&Vß. W. Mackav ?>' -ii • P ' 3m > lho ad J u dicator« of tho Brilliancy Prize (presented by Mr. Skipage, the president of the Napier Chess Club), submitted their repoit. .They awarded the prize to Mr. H. L. James for his gamo against Mr. Miles, ■in which he forced a win in six moves by sacrificing three pieces. The g&mo ■which Mr. G. Jones (Masterton) won from Mr. A. W. Gyles (Westporl) was the "runner-up." Tho Auckland Working Men's Club agreed to take twenty copies of the Congress Book, ac in th© previouß year. The Otago C.C. returned ' thanks for copies of the amended rules. 'The Wellington Working Men's Club 'forwarded its annual eubscription. The t Auckland Chess Club aeked the a«>ociation to award the Brilliancy Prize offered in a local competition, and the eleven games submitted in this connection arenow being looked into by Messrs. W. IS. Mason and R. J. Barnes. Herr Curt Ronniger (Hans Hedewjg.'s successor) wrote from Leipzig (111 German) intimating that he had included the "book of , the Timaru Congress in hi 6 catalogue of "Schach Mitteilungen" (Chees Publications), and ordered a second copy of the 1 book. . The outgoing correspondence dealt mainly with the Napier Congress. With regard tr> the allitiation of the Nelson Chese Club and the allotment of the next championship congress to it, Mr. .Fell stated that he had not yet received .the NelsoD Club's decision in the matter. „ Mr. James reported that forty of the Napier Congress games had already been 'annotated, and that he expected the Congress Book to be in the hands of the printer in about a month's time. He estimated that the book would consist of i about ninety pages, including ten pages devoted to an introductory article and two to photographs. Mr. Fell reported that over 240 copies of the Timaru Congress Book had been sold, and that copies were still in demand. The sale of the Napier Congress Book would, to all appearance, be equally successful. The association would wind up the year 191112 with a small credit balance, and this would be increased when tho Wanganui and Timaru Clubs' subscriptions came "to hand. Mr.' James gave notice of the follow- • ing motion : "That the pairing in congresses under the auspices "of the New Zealand Chess Association be by lot only, Without regard to club membership or other consideration.'" Under the present system (which has obtained for v twenty years past) competitors from tho same club or centre (or who happen to bo brothers) are required to meet in the opening rounds. Clubs are particularly ■ requested to instruct their delegates in > this matter. Mr. James ako brought up the matter of newspaper and Pre6s Association reports of congress play. Consideration of this question was deferred till the annual meeting. This is to be held in May, and clubs are therefore asked to forward nominations for tho various offices before the end of April. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded to the Napier Chess Club's, executive officers and committee for their splendid management of the recent championship congress, to Mesers. Still and Mackay for their labours in making the- award of the Brilliancy Prize, and to the Napier president, Mr. Skipage, for donating same. A similar tribute to Mr. Armstrong for presiding closed the meeting.
