LOCAL AND GENERAL It has been known for some time past that a movement has been afoot in the city to form a separate industrial union of drapers' assistants. Originally this body of workers was included as a branch of the Amalgamated Society of Merchants' Assistants' Union, the regi»tration of which was prominently before the public last year. Tho employees iv the large drapery establishments and in kindrecl buaineaeee, however, felt that their interest awould be better served by a separata union of their own. AccoTdingly the, idea was energetically taken up, and welcomed, and, after considerable- exertions on the part of the promoters, success has at length attended their efforts. A union has just been registered with the Labour Dopartment under the title of "The Softgoods Assistants' Industrial Union of Workers," including employees iv tho drapery and mercery trades. Over 4QO signatures out of a possible 500 were received in favour of the formation of the separate , union. On Tuesday next the newly-formed body will hold its first annual meeting in the Trades HaU. Reports from the executive will be conesidered, and the election of officers take place. At a meeting to be held about a week afterwards, the terms of a proEosed agreement with the employer* Will c put before the union, for consideration. The employers will be approached subsequently. Tho March sittings of iho Court of Appeal, which commence on Monday next, promise to be fairly lengthy. It is estimated that the list wilt comprise about twenty c^see.
