STEWART SENTENCED.
m RESULT OF GERMAN "SPY" CASE WHAT THE TRIAL DISCLOSED. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. BERLIN, 4th February. The case against Bertrand Stewart, charged with espionage at Bremen and elsewhere, is based exclusively upon the evidence of a Belgian who, according to the defence, while acting as interpreter and guide, thrust upon Stewart information unasked, and then ' denounced him. Witnesses were produceu to shoW that the Belgian was untrustworthy, and had been previously convicted in Belgium. The Court dispensed. with the evidenco of the rest of the witnesses for the defence, and sentenced Stewart ,to three and a-half years' imprisonment •in a fortress. Stewart addressed the public in Court, and said be wished everyone in Engl*nd to know that he was innocent. ACCUSED SHOCKED AT HIS SENTENCE. GERMAN OFFICER'S CARELESSNESS. COSTS HIM A YEAR'S IMPRISONMENT. (Received February 5, 8.10 a.m.) BERLIN, 3rd February. The Court held that Stewart had failed to secure information endangering the Empire. Stewart was shocked at his sentence. At Wilhelmshaven a court-martial sentenced Captain Steinbnnck to a year's imprisonment for carelessness at Christmas in leaving papers connected with the Stewart case in a waiting room at Hamburg, which were stolen. INSPIRED WITH PATRIOTISM. A MITIGATING~CIRCUMSTANCE. February 5, 11.30 a.m.) BERLIN, 4th February. The Court regarded Stewart as being inspired with patriotism, and considered this as a mitigating circumstance in fix* ing his sentence. BRITISH WAR OFFICE • DECISION. LONDON, 3rd' February. The War Ofh'ce has issued fresh instiuctione to officers travelling in Germany, including the reporting of themselves in Alsace Lorraine to the police and military authorities. They must 60 report in every town visited. As revealed in tho Course of Stewart'fc espionage _ trial, he, as an officer, travelled in Germany without the knowledge of the War Office.
