There are probably, few vessels, afloat that have met with co many misfortunes as have befallen the steamer Hillci'ag, which sailed from Port Pirie for Sydney last week. The Hillcrag was formerly the Bannockburnu On the day she was launched she shipped a large quantity of water, and had to be docked for alterations. ' She left Durban the same day as the steamer Waratah, and experienced the full force of the terrific hurricane which is believed to have been the cause of the loss of (that vessel. According to the chief officer of the Hillcrag, the gale commenced in the afternoon, and increased so rapidly that the steamer had almost to stop her engineß. She had 250 tons of coal on deck, and most of this had to be jettisoned. Enormous seas" threw the steamer on her beam ends, and swept the decks from stem to stern. Considerable damage was done the Hillcrag, which was bound for New . Zealand, but It was found necessary to pub into Albany for coal. The Hillcrag met with an even worse ex- [ perience when running from Portland (Oregon) to Shanghai. In the mid-Pacific the seas were bo heavy that the whole of her fixtures, including bridge, cabins, and lifeboats, were swept overboard. There was 400,000 ft of timber on deck, and not a stick of if was Jeft. On the 4th March, 1910, tho Hillcrag had another misadventure, when steaming near to Dover with a cargo of spirits and wine. She collided with the steamer James Westoli, and half of her port side was knocked in. The Chinese crew mutined, and attacked the first officer. He drew his revolver, and shot two of them. One subsequently died. The Hillcrag also grounded at Port Blakeby, and damaged her hull. Ab San Francißco during .October, 1911, she was sold to her present owners, and her name was changed from Bonnockburn to Hillcrag. Captain. Dent is in command.
