POLITICS IN VICTORIA AND NEW ZEALAND.

' TO THB EDITOB. Sir, — When, when,, when will your great advanced Socialist correspondents cease to mislead an unsuspecting public? Your correspondent Edward Tregear, in your issue of yesterday's date, tells us that Mr. Murray, Premier of Victoria, I is a " Conservative leader ot Conservatives." Speaking as a New Zealsunder who has resided on the other side of the Tasman Sea. for some years past, let me say that Mr. Murray is. the leader of the Liberal Party. During last Par- ! liarnent the Labour Parly <>\tv thero made an attempt to oust the Liberals, but the Conservatives made a' coalition with the Liberals on the understanding that no Radical or contentious legislation was to be introduced. The result has been that little legislation has been put through Parliament,, and Victoria has had, and is ,to-day enjoying, a peaceful political time, and is the most pros- | porous of all the Australian States. It may be said that Mr. Murray's hands are more or less tied, and that he does" j nothing, whatever his party's ambition I may be; but his office ia .secure, and, all said and done, even if he appears "to be sleepy and tired of doing nothing, Victoria is 'prospering on, or in spite of, his inactivity — I leave your*readers to judge which. Personally, I hope that the same plan may be followed here. | I hope that our Conservatives and our [ Liberals will be reasonable one to another, that they will forget the wild things said ,by Maseey and Ward • in the heat of an election campaign, that they Will bury the hatchet, and go straight ahead with a policy that will settle the remainder of our unoccupied lands, and spare us from being dragged through more political strife. — I am, etc., , HEREDITARY CONSERVATIVE. Manawatu, 30th January, 1912.
