A SHIPBUILDING RECORD.
m HARLAND AND WOLFF'S YEAR (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, 22nd December. According to the Belfast correspondent of the Telegraph, Messrs. Harfand and Wolff have during the year now closing, secured what may be aptly termed the triple crown of the shipbuilding world. When the last launch of the year took place and the R.M.S.P. Company's vessel ( Demerara went into the water, the firm had launched during the twelve months ten vessels, with an aggregate tonnage of 113,209, and a total horse-power of 97,000. These figures give Messrs. Harland and Wolff the distinction of the largest output on record in one year from one yard, the Blue Riband of the shipbuilding world for the thirteenth year, and the greatest horse-power of any one year for a single firm. The ten vessels, of course, included the White Star liner 1 Titanic, whose official tonnage is now given by the builders as 46,000. The second largest was the R.M.S.P. Co.'s liner Arcanza, with a tonnage of 15,000. There were three others, each with tonnage exceeding 11,000. One of the new ships, the Patriotic, built for the Liverpool and Belfast service of the Belfast Steamship Co., with a gross tonnage of 2200, will have the remarkable horsepower of 6100. Down to the present the record for the highest output of one year lay* with Messrs. Swan,. Hunter, and Richardson, of the Tyne, who, in the Mauretania year, 1906, launched vessels with an aggregate tonnage of 117,943. ' The coming year will also be a remarkably busy one in the shipyard of ; Messrs.' Harland) and Wolff, who have orders on. hand' which include the new Holland-America liner of 32,500 tons, an 18,000 ton' White Star liner for the Australian service, tho keel of which i was laid five months ago; three RoyaJ, Mail Steam' Packet meat-carrying vessels, a Bibby liner, an Elder-Dempster' liner, and a vessel for the African Steamship Company. Other work on hand includes the completing of the White Star liner, Titanic, with which such good progress has been made that she will be able to go on her maiden voyage at the date stated. What the gieat shipyard of Messrs. Harland and Wolff is to Belfast may be well understood when it is stated that it 'finds employment at the present time for 15,000 hands, and that the wages bill reaches the enromous total of £25,000 weekly.
