VITAL STATISTICS
The return of births, . marriages, and deaths registered at Wellington during the month of January, and the figures for January of last year, 'are as under: —
- The number of marriages solemnised in the office during the month was 24, as against 21 in June, 1910.
Ac a striking instance of the amount, of valuable time frequently gratuitously devoted to ratepayers' interests ( by members of a public body, a Wairarapa South County councillor informed a Carterton News reporter- that on Friday last he motored over 60 miles through tho country in order to make himself conversant with the requirements, and attending to council businese.. In this connection he was able to" immediately detail any information desired at Saturday^ meeting respecting the works required and carried out. .. Mr. George Graoewood, of the firm of Hubbuck and Son, is at present in Wellington. For a long time the congestion in the parcels and luggage office at the Lambfou railway station has been acute, and carpenters are now engaged in making an extension. Tho front wall to the northward for a distance of about sixty feet has been taken away, and erected übout eight feet further oa. the ' footpath. This extension will greatly facilitate matteis so far as the public is concerned. ' There was. only one banKruptcy in Wellington during the month of January. A start has been made in Huia-street, Lower Hutt, with the erection of a. Masonic Hall. The building will have a frontage of 36ft, and the plans provide for two stories in front and a single story at the rear. On the ground floor there will be an assembly hall 18ft by 26ft, and a lodge room 45ft by 26ft, besides a kitchen and other rooms, and conveniences. The" lodge room will be of up-to-date design, special attention having been paid to ventilation. Ross's patent ventilators are being installed. The refectory will be situated upstairs. The cost of the work will be about £700. Mr. F. de J. Clere is architect, and Mr. T. H. Norris, of Lower Hutt, the builder. A defect which wa3 noticed in the steering of the ferry boat Awa.roa in heavy weather has been referred to the designer of the vessel, Mr. Walter Reeks, of Sydney. He reports that the defect is a very trifling one, and the q^ipany has decided to make tha necessary alterations forthwith. •Tho mercery stock of Carr and 'Bavtlett, Willis-street. i« advertised for sale by tender by the Commercial Agency Co., Ltd.
