The leaders of the Lithgow strikers announce that they will not resume work on the terms suggested by the arbitrator until they have been starved into submission, but that this is unlikely in view of the continued support they are receiving. ENGLISH COLLIERY DISPUTE. CHANCE OF A~COMPROMISE. LONDON, 29th. January. The coal-owners and- miners are considering a joint committee's report, and the chance of reaching a compromise is hopeful. A pamphlet issued by the miners states that the average profit on ordinary shares in ninety-two leading coal companies was 9.6 per cent, per annum for a period of thirteen years. PROTEST AGAINST LOCK-OUTS. A MENACE TO TRADE UNIONISM LONDON, 29th January. The General Federation oi Trade Unions', in its quarterly report, protests against the practice of declaring a general lock-out, which the cotton employers hurled ©very time a local movement was made towards better wages and conditions. This was a menace to trade unionism. If the owners were justified in adopting Such a course, then the trade unions must bo justified in striking over' the whole pOuntry when an employer discharged a man for beinj; a trade unionist. The unions, however, were not likely to adopt this policy, as it would, compel them to strike in some countries every week. NEWNES STRIKERS RESUME. (Received January 30, 9.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Newnes strikers have resumed pending a conference on the matters in dispute. *
