RECEPTION TO MR. H. B. IRVING

A civic reception was accorded to Mr. H. B. Irving, the well-known actor, at the Town Hall this afternoon. There was a large attendance — ladies predominating. . The Acting-Mayor (Councillor John Smith) presided. In the course of- a brief, speech he said he was sorry Mrs. Irving was unable to be present, owing to a- bad • cold. The people had assembled to give a civic reception to Mr. Irving. Mr. Irving was an able exponent of the art which Shakespeare had bo bejewelled.- All hoped that Mr. and Mrs. Irving would have a pleasant time in New Zealand, and that they would ! some day return to these shores. They wished to give Mr. and Mrs. Irving a hearty welcome to the Empire City of the country. (Applause.) Sir John Findlay also spoke a few words of welcome on behalf of the Wellington Shakespeare Society. (Proceeding.)

The difficulty of providing accommoda- ; tion for the free place pupils at the Wellington High Schools having been settled by extensions, the necessity tor the retention of the secondary, classes at Newtown School has ceased to exist, and the high school department has therefore been disestablished as from 31st December last. Three years ago a lady farmer near Mold, Wales, sold a pony to her son, who resides some twenty-five miles away, between Rhuddlan aud Rhyl. The pony has_ for the third time found its way back to its former home, managing to unfasten two gates in, order to, do so. A Paris music hall artist has been ordorcd to pay £7 damages for smashing a telephone apparatus after a heated discussion over tho wire with her manager.
