MATRICULATION.
TO THE EDITOR. 6ir,--*I was astonished to read in your last night'i iesue, in your account of the proceedings of the University Senate, of a. resolution moved by Professor J. R. Brown, and carried, with reference to matriculation, whereby the Senate has relieved its Registrar from the work of, obtaining from students the declaration required when matriculating,, and has substituted a cumbrous procedure, the carrying out of which is to be put upon the Registrars of the affiliated colleges. I protest against the action of an outside body in saddling officers of the college councils with work and responsibility without consulting those officers or their . employers. And in this matter what has I been carried is really too absurd. The ; matter of matriculation is purely one j for the university ; the university conduels the examination, and then it is incumbent on the university to give the 'examinees a certificate that they have passed the examination, o« presentation of which to the authorities of the colI lego to which they decide to attach themselves they can eqter on their university course at.that.xollege. I do not ' see that the maJter \v'a3 referred to any finance committee with the view of paying to the colleges any moneyß to enable them to pay their Registrars for the work proposed to be thrust upon them. But I would submit that the resolution j passed is absolutely ultra vires ; thp j Senate can issue instructions to its. own officers, but not to the officers of other bodies. * Again I, as one of the Registrars, protest against the action of the Senate. — I am, etc., i CHAS.
