LYONS MAIL ROBBERY

1 EX-POSTMAN ARRESTED. VALUABLE SECURITIES RECOVERED. ♦ By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright (Received January 29, 8.45 a.m.) BRUSSELS, 28th January. Bazoncourt, an ex-postman at Lyons, has been arrested, and has confessed to robbery from the Lyons mail in November of 40,000 francs worth of securities, which have been recovered. In the matter of coolness and audacity it would be difficult to find a European parallel for the robbery carried out on the Marseilles mail train late on Friday or early on Saturday morning (wrote the Paris correspondent of the London Chronicle on 19th November.) Three of the mail vans attached to this train were forcibly entered, the registered bags cut open, and the more valuable of their contents carriid off. The registered packages and letters were carefully examined, and those of a moderate value or containing cheques, bank drafts, or simply documents, were all left behind. In bank notes and jewellery the thieves must have secured a very valuable haul. The actual loss of tho property stolen cannot be ascertained for the moment, bub it t& variously comSuted at from £50,000 to £100,000. [either the personnel of the train nor the postal employees busy at work in the sorting vans were aware of what was taking place. 'The thieves escaped without leaving the slightest clue afi to their identity.
