MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Dr. A. M'Arthur,' S.M., presided at the Magietrate-'s Court to-day. Five persons, who had not previously offended, were convicted of drunkenness. James Barker, for a second offence, was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. George Gardiner pleaded guilty to being a wgue and a vagabond. Prisoner wae found last night in the WindsorHotel, in company with another man, trying to get into 4k room. He was accosted by the manager (Mr. Hardcastle), and made the, excuse that he was looking for a Mr. Graham, who, he said, occupied No. 63. This was proved to be a fabrication, and Mr. Hardcastle handed Gardiner over' to the police. His companion escaped. Sub-Inspector Sheehan stated that nothing was known about the man, and suggested an adjournment till to-morrow, in order that enquiries might be made into his antecedents. This course was' adopted by the Magistrate. Joseph South, ahas James Reynolds, who has a ponchant for fighting when under the influence of liquor, admitted eoverely assaulting one Edward Brown at Ponrua on 13th November; South, wht> haa been previously convicted for similar offences, punished more than one person on the occasion in question, and, after stripping himself to the waist, invited all and sundry to come on and be punished. His Worship said accused r was obviously a very dangerous man. and sent him to gaol for two months. On charges oi insobriety, Annie Ward was, at the. Mount Cook Police Court this morning, convicted and discharged. One female first offender was fined 10«, with the alternative ot' forty hours' imprisonment, and for a similar offence one ilret male offender was convicted and discharged, air. J. F.
