THE WOOL SALES.

i AMERICANS IN THE MARKET Th« January wool sales opened at 9 ,**. m. at the Town Hall to-day, with an Laggregate catalogue of 17,466 balee. [Stayers representing Yorkshire, American, find Continental houses, also local woollen were present in strength, and /jfrom the outset competition was keen for I'^ill fine wools, especially those suitable j-jfor America. , Such wools were generally i^'jd per lb better than similar wools of,'r4feff«d at the December sales; but the wools were slightly easier in ij^price, where not on a par with the j^Pecember rates. . J ¦ The wool came in in better condition ' &han ordinarily, bright and clean ; but •6me lines were wet, and rough and log;*ktained. All attractive wools com••jinanded attention and brought satisfactory prices. Dalgety's, for example, sold Uja choice fine bale lot of halfbred South' (downs from Palmerston at 12£ d, which 'CMm the top figure. The -Experimental R&unn at Weraroa obtained xU|d for cross- , t-bred hoggets heavily skirted, and Hid j *>Jor crossbred ewes and wethers. The Pf*D.L.Y. For bellies and pieces, also, prices were easier at this -sale, but wool growers generally iwero prepared to meet the market and sell their -wool at the satisfactory prices niling. The attendance of buyers was ¦sb large a# usual, and all markets were represented, and T»e are pleased to rejport that America was once again bidding freely for wools suitable for that ' country. Some of the dips displayed in our stores show better condition than they have for a number of years, being very bright, clean, and well grown. The wools throughout were lighter in condition than last year, .mainly on account of the recent heavy rains. At tiuo sale, the buohwool and seedy-wool is always in evidence, and as uuial our catalogue contained a few lots of this description, but taking the wools right through, they were ahead of last year's in general get-up and quality. The Marlborough clips have come forward in excellent condition, being bright, -well grown, , and in sound order. The merino clips, especially show an* improvement in 4hu», direction. The following 1 table shows the exact position of all qualities as compared with our sale of the 4th December, 1911, and our sale of the 11th January, 1912 *-
