Ukstone wa6 shaken like an earthquake through the bursting of the water tank, and the gasometer was flung thirty yards. The flames shot hundreds of feet in the air. The oacupants of the demolished cottages had miraculous escapes. Several buildings were burnt. The debris thrown on to the railway caused suspension of traffic. It is believed that the, gasometer yielded to the pressure of water, thus causing the gas to escape and ignite. The explosion burst the water-holder, and tha torrent flooded houses and factories. '
