RECENT ROBBERY IN HOPPER* . ..i . STREET. '•'¦A man named Albert Neilsen, ap- . patently dbout.36 years of ag§, appeared ' ' "on remand in* the Magistrate's Court, be- ! fore Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., to-day, \ charged with theft from the dwelling of Alice Hall, Hopperstreet, of a quantity of wearing apparel, tableware, and vege- j tables, of the total value of £3. Sub-Inspector Sheehan prosecuted. Ac eused, who- was represented by Mr. K. j F. O"Leary, pleaded not guilty. ! The evidence of Mrs. Hall was that about 11 o'clock' on the evening of the J 23rd of December last she heard a noise* in. her kitchen, and on going to investigate saw a man, whom she identified as accused, in the scullery. She said, " What do you want?" and the man replied, "What I want I'll take." v Ac-! cused then ordered her into a comer of . rf llle kitchen, and proceeded to lay hands on various article's. He told her if she moved he "would knock her brains out. On leaving the kitchen accused, in reply ; - to a question as to what he had taken, | said, " What I wanted I have taken." Cross-examined by Mr. O'Leary witness said she was So frightened that she could ; not judge as to accused's condition. She was too afraid to call out for assistance ¦ to the boarders in the house. j Detective Rawle deposed *to visiting accused's house, "which was quite close to Mrs. pall's place, and finding several ol the stolen articles. ' On being charged ¦with theft, accused replied '. "1 ¦ was going to put them back ovei* the fence. I was drunk at the time., and was invited to the house by one of the boarders. *' .Witness subsequently asked all .the ininates at Mrs. "Hall's house if any such, invitation had been given, i The reply in each case was "No." To Mr. O'Leary : "I have known accused for about, two yeai*. He is a labourer, -and is addicted to drink." Acctfsed, on being formally charged, pleaded guilty. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
