NORTHERN TOURNAMENT.

SECOND DAY'S PLAY..

The weather broke in the early hours ,of this morning, and the hot sun of yesterday, with greens running keenly, gave place to cloudy skies, a breeze from the aouth, threats of rain, and lawne to "which a sharp shower had imparted a grip that was in decided contrast to .the glassiness of the day before. Play started a little late in" consequence, and -it wai not until nearly the end of the •first round of the day and the fourth of the tournament that anything occurred "to mar the harmony of the proceedings," aa a visiting bowler remarked. Then a sharp shower drove all hands to shelter, but the rain lasted only^a few minutes, and the round was concluded in fine weather. Later, and just before the commencement of the fifth round, tile rain again came on, but it was only ,• shower, and the game proceeded. Not 'long afterward* the rain returned / and the indications' are not too promising. With to-day's play only just begun •and another full day'fi play in prospect the beginning of the end, there »re only a few signals out. In section A Dall (Wellington) and Gordon (St. .John's) have completed their course, with four wins and no losses. Dall is now playing Masson, who has only one win to has credit, and Gordon te playing ,Topp, who has losb as. many games as Masson. - Bell (Wellington) and Wakeman (Palaatua) are standing out prominently in section B, and both are playing in round k 5 against skips who have suffered previous defeat. „ Ballinger had an easy win against r Glasgow (St. John's) this morning and •stands out easily as head of section 0 with 4 wins! and no losses. This afternoon he is. playing Sloane, of Johnsonville, who has one win and three losses. The Carlton Club (Macgregor, skip) Stands out prominently in section D, with a 4 to 0 tecord, but Prince, of Newtown, and Coopew, of Karori, are .following closely with 3to 1. Prince's -.team was off colour this morning, and '•fell down to the veteran M'Farlane, of 'Wanganui, but this afternoon h» is playing Shallcrass (Greenmeadowsj, who has ,not done very well so far. Cooper is meeting M'Gregor, and the contest ¦should be a good one — weather per--mitting. Chegwin is on top in Section E, with Still (Wellington) close in the rear, and ¦in Section F Sayweil (Feilding) is lead ,ing, with three others close up. In Section G Sievwright (Wellington) ' met hifi first defeat at the hands of Mac(Ghristchurch),' with whom he now ties; along with Hollatd (Hutt) and Norwood (victoria). Wylie (Newtown) and Lock (Te Hiwi) win with unbeaten records in Section H, and Craig (Gisborne) and Parata (Te Hiwi) have similarly won through Section J. In Section IS. Churchward this morning fell a Victim to Kilgour, of Carlton. j " This is the first time Kilgour has beaten us for six years," said a member of the team, "and now we are equal — 3 wins, 1 loss."
