FOREIGNERS CONCENTRATING.
(Received September 12 A 10.20 a.m.) PEKIN, llth September. ! The foreigners in Chingtu are concentrating at Chungking, the port of Szechuan, on the Yantsze River. The province of Szechuan, which is as large as Ftance, is infested i with bandits in the mountainous districts, who are naturally ready to take advantage of any trouble. The bulk of the population, however, comprises an industrious and enterprising people, occupied mainly in. agriculture, thougii there are some very large manufacturing industries. Until recently^ the poppy was extensively cultivated in the province for opium making, and it may be that the suppression of the.trado in opium is a considerable factor in the present outbreak.
