WAINUI MAIN. READY TO BEGIN. MINISTERIAL AUTHORITY GIVEN.
Everything ie now ready for the commencement of the duplication of the wat<?rmain from Wainui to the city. The City Council decided last year to undertake the work and a Joan of £100,000 was raised for the laying of a-n extra main i from the tunnel under the Wainui hill irito Wellington, for the construction of a receiving reservoir above the Nairn*treet Reserve and additional reticulation in the city. The start of the Work has been delayed through several cattttfe. The bulk of the pipes arrived some monthe ago, but necessary valves and tee-pipes came later, and recently some official hitch occurred. This morning, however, the Mayor. (Mr. T. M. Wtlford), who ha« just returned ffom a, health'tecruiting visit to the South, told a Poet reporter that lit. had interviewed the Minister for Public Works (Son. R. M'K«nzie) who had come to a decision on the points in difipttte, and had signed a paper authorising the work to proceed at once. The engineer for the department ifcftpecteni the pir>e line on Friday afternoon. Tat work is now in the hands of the City Engineer. Mr. Morton ha* already tnaas a start with the receiving 'reservoir and., probably, the laying of the pipes will be commenced in a few days. The estimated ec<st of Me duplication of the main is £80,000, The pipes are ot cast iron, 2liftc"h in diameter, and about an inch thick. The line followed tfill be that of the new Hutt-road, which will save ft considerable distance as compared with the old main, which follows til© windings of the oW road from Pe* tone. The distance is about 11 miles.
