TO OPEN UP TAUPO.
RAILWAY PROJECT SUPPORTED. (fe* MK.BBRA*M— SPECIAL 10 MIS *OST.] 1 AUCKLAND, 24th August. • The proposal to bring Taapo withb nmo hours of Auckland by extending the Taupo Totara > Timber Company's railway js strongly supported by the Mayor of Auckland (Mr. C. J. Parr). .'.' , nt , urd *o «»y»" Mr. Parr said, that of ©very 100 people who go to Rotorua not ono cares to undertake the axponeiv«, rough, and arduoH* journey by coach and motor to Taupo. Taupo for the average person is thus v"cry effectually out off from Auckland. A great deal of the Taupo land now lying waste could be utilised for settlement, and if wo Aucklandera watch thinge properly Auckland should be the only Market for the district. The present Taupo Totara Timber Company's railway runs thirty miles from the main Auckland.Rotorua line to Mokai, and to complete it to Taupo only requires another sixteen mifea of construction. There is much to 1 be eaid for allowing the company to finish its line, taking it through Tanpo if some fair and equitable arrangement to the public can be made by the. Government with the company. XJnd^r <mch an arrangement. Taupo could be connected by rail wifch Auckland in a year or two, and I am sure that much material benefit would accrue thereby, both to Taupo And to Auckland. The alternative, of course, us to -wait until the Government does the work. The Government, however,' has Its haalds full at present wifch railways under construction, and I am afraid ( Auckland and Taupo will have to Wait a long time before the Government provides this particular connection. t in the meantime the whole district is being kept back, and everybody suffers. I recognise quite well the force of the objection to privately owned railways, but t would rather have a privately owned line,' with proper safeguards to the public, and enjoy it in my lifetime, than have the pleasure oi 'merely, contemplating my grand children riding on the Government line."
