FIRE BRIGADE'S NEW MOTOR WAGON
A trial tmp of the Central Fire Brigade's new motor, hose, ahd ladder wagon was ci "rried out yesterday. Among those pre*ettifc were Councillors Trevor, Godber, Cohi in, M'Kenzie, and Fuller, of the tfire Brigade's Committee, and th© City Engines I- (Mr. W. H. Morton). Tht, wagon, which in the most powerful yet installed at Uie Fire Station, arrived recently from Jingland. It waa built by Merry weatheits, and is propelled by a Daimler engine of 55 horee-power. Attached to the wagon is a 65 foot extension ladnler ingeniously supported over the body of the car. The ladder carries its o\wn wheels, and is extended by winch gea r at the bsee. His Jpowe/fully built wiljh trussed handrails. Complete manoeuvres were carried out before the commitlci*' in the station .yard, the ladder being detached and run up to full length, in' h couple of minutes. After this nianoeuvtt" had been tarried out sev eral times, thfc committee were taken a trial run in the waggon up to Wadestown and back.. Though the Wadfestown road was in a 'wretched Btate with sticky and sloppy ni lid the car went up in seven minutes from Lambton Station carrying the niipmbers of ih© committee, the City F.ngincer, tho fire brigade superintendent (M f. O'Brien), the council's motor expert (.Mr. .Spry), and an extra fireman. On the descent the brakes worked splendidly, nrtd a test stop was made later in Sydney-street from full epeed to slandfltill in fifteen feet. The wagon is not intended for suburban work bub for tits city, where the ladder may b© required. There is, however, a full equipment of hcao and iir&tighting appliances conicd aboard jw well.
