The census return of th© Christchurch district has just been completed, and showß that the population is 90,400, or 8513 more than it was in 1906, when the last census was 1 taken. The increase has been at the rat© of 10.39 per cent. There has been a decrease in the Central ward of the city, and the evidence of the l'eturns goes to show that the, people are moving out into the suburbs and leaving the Central area for the business of the city. The extensions of the electric toamway system and the search for cheaper building lots have been responsible in a large measure for the rise of the suburbs, especially in the Waimairi county, which is served by six tram routes. In Wahnairi the population) has increased by 2913, or 27.27 per cent., while Sprey-don, which is also well served by the system, has gone ahead at the rate of 40.72 per cent., and 1 in Halswell, where the tram is at the borders of the county, the progress has been at the rate of 45.51 per cent. The contest between Sumner and New Brighton • for the gi«ater numerical strength has again proved interesting. New Brighton has improved its position slightly. The rates of increase were : New Brighton 50.45 per cent 1 ., and Sumner 47.92 per cent. In the wards of the city the increases have been at a more moderate rate, the figures being : Linwood 19.99 per cent., St. Albans 14.63 per cent 1 ., Sydenham 10.55 per cent.
