PETROLEUM FROM TRINIDAD.
THE FIRST SHIPMENT. By Telegraph.— Pren* Association.— Copyrigno., (Received May 3, 9.10 a.m.) PORT OF SPAIN, 2nd May. The first shipment of petroleum from the Trinidad wells, consisting of 960,000 gallons, has been sent to New* York. Several companies are now approaching the export stage. [The Port of Spain correspondent of th© Standard of Empire stated on 24th March : — "Groat activity continues throughout the oilfields of the colony. The Governor, Sir George Le Hunt©, with a large party, visited the property of the Trinidad Oil Company recently, and is proceeding also to the General Petroleum Company's property immediately. On both, tangible results ar& now being shown. The Governor, in his address to the Legislative Council, foreshadowed increased taxation to th© extent of £46,500, mainly for the opening up of the country by new roads.]
