CREATION OF SLUM AREAS.
HATAITAI ASSOCIATION ACTIVE. At its monthly meeting held last evening the executive of the Ilataitai Municipal Electors' Association passed the following resolution on the motion of its president (Mr. A. Leigh Hunt) :—: — "That l)he Wellington City Cuuncil bo uiged tp at once create a by-law under Section 31 of tha Municipal Corporations Amendment Act, 1010, presciibing the minimum frontage and area of an allotment of land on which a, dwelling house may bo erected." In support of his motion the mover pointed out that this section of the Act wan designed to give municipalities the power to prevent the creation cf slum aieas. and he thought that it should be 'put into operation immediately. Tho suburbs should be protected from tho jerry builder who frequently pk'cea throe houses- on two s&ctions. In his opinion tho minimum of 40ft frontage should V>a prescribed for tho suburban area*. Tho by-law would not cause hardship to unyon* who harl previously nibclividecl into smaller area.?, as the Act apecklly made provision that the above mentioned sect-ion should not apply to any allotment of land shown on «■ plan of subdivision which had besr deposited ab the Lands Oflico prior to Us passing, the date of which was the 3rd December last year. The meeting' decided that the resolution should be sent on to tho other municipal electors' associations in tha city with a view to securing their cooperation, and making joint representations to tli© coiincil on this matter, which it was considered should be taken in hand without further delay.
