HARBOUR BOARD.

At the monthly meeting of the Harbour Board last night there were present Messrs. R. Fletcher (chairman), J. W. M'Ewan, C. W. Jones, C. E. Daniell, M. Cohen, F. G. Bolton, H. C. Tewsley, and W. Hildreth. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. Wilford. FINANCE. The bank pass books showed :—Current account, credit balance, £21,577 2s 2d ; imprest account, credit balance, £9zO Is 9d; on fixed deposit, £71,138 10s. Payments : — For interest), accounts and wages, £12,565 17s 10d; for progress payments on contracts, £5841 9s ad ; for salaries for April, £783 lls 9d ; total, £19,190 19s 4d. Payment of the above amount was agreed to. \ GENERAL. The chairman reported :—: — 1. That the tender of Messrs. Dalge'ty and Co., Ltd., Christchurch, for the supply of 357 tons of cut and punched steel hoops and 10 tons of malleable cast iron studs for the sum of £3608 15s, with deposit of £310 in lieu of sureties, had been accepted. It was decided that the seal of the board be affixed to the agreement of contract. 2. That the following tenders for the annual supplies and services had been accepted : — Coal, A and B groups, N.Z. State Coal Mines; coal, C group, Brunner Coal Co., Ltd.; coal, D group, Andrew.? and Lissington ; removal of rubbish, F. Diamond. Other matters dealt with by the board are reported in another column.

Dr. Cameron, a candidate for the City Council, writes lengthily to The Post, submitting that he was not fully reported in his recent reference to certain corporation jaea "not earning 3s a day." He explains that he had no desire at all to reflect on the general body of tho council's employees. "My remarks," he explains, "referred to two lucky men working in the shady nooks of the suburbs." Regarding one plank of his platform, "avoidance of uungling, 1 " he states ironically :—"I: — "I think I every engineer will admit that our pr« sent 'cork-screw' tramlines to the suburbs are the right things to run tramv profitably on. Going round the Basin Reserve alone probably costs the city £2000 to £3000 a year, and of course it "will cost us nothing to alter this. The straightening of the Tinakori-road line and laying the Charlotte-street line won't cost anything, of course. Tho omission to put a footpath through tha Hatatai tunnel when it was being built might have been strategy, but I do not believe it was right, and, also, it is questionable if the present tunnel site was the best, and I believe it was not. Of course any carter will pick tho Queen's Status up and dump it down in another place for nothing. I question if it isn't an insult to our late Queen to move her on as has been proposed. I have no doubt our stoutest citizen can get ample shelter from northerly and southerly storms behind either of two Bin boards on the 'fly shelter' opposite the Post Office." Dv. Cameron also contends that he is justified in the use of the word "dabbling" to describe the municipal milk policy. Discussing the price of timber, which he mentioned in a recent speech,- he maintains that his statements have not been refuted. "Landlords and tenants," he remarks, "want plenty of cheap O.K. and less of the piesent O.B." A part}- oi" Eastbourne residents spent the Easter holidays at the Mountain House at Dawson's Falls, Mount Egmont. The party ascended the mountain on Easter Sunday, and gained a hplendid view oi' the southern side ; the northern side was obscured by clouds. They were delighted with the treatment they received at the Mountain House, and speak highly of Mount Egmont as a pleasure resort. Messrs. A. L. Wilson and Co. advertise .for sale by public auction in their rooms to-morrow, at noon, a block of eleven acres., together with buildings thereon situate Waterloo-road, Lower Hutt. Tho firm will aloo hold a sale of timber at the yards next to the Public Trustee's ■office, at 10.30 a.m., and at 1.30 p.m. a sale of furniture at the residence, 18, Aiictin-street. Messrs. Moreland, of ' Birch Hill, Marlborough, at a favourable* price. A meeting of tho Senior Cadet Scout 6 Corps will bs held -to-morrow night. To-morrow, at 2 p.m.. Mossis. J. W.
