BREACHES OF AWARDS.

0 PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS. Mr. C. W. Aldridga, Inspector of Awards, proceeded against several master butchers in the Magistrate's Court today for breaches of the butchers' award. Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., presided. W. Woolland did not appear to answer a charge that he committed a breach of the butchers' award in that he engaged a non-unionist when xmionists were available. His Worship said that defendant was foolish not to come and make an explanation. He seemed to be one of those people who were not going to take any notice of awards, and. was taking up an attitude of defiance. Mr. Aldridge said he did not think that was the ease in this instance. It was Woolland's first offence; previously they had always found 1 him a very fair man. > A fine of £2 was inflicted. W. Collyer, butcher, Kilbirnie, for whom Mr. Anderson appealed, was also charged with a similar breach of the same award. It was alleged by the inspector that on loth January defendant engaged a man named I'hos. Brown whon there were unionists available. Evij dence to this efisct was given by Mr. A. H. Cooper, t-ecuetary of the Butchers Operatives' Union. Mr. Anderson stated that defendant had applied to the imicn for a man, and one was sent out, but he proved unsuitable, and was only kept a day. A week later Brown, who had been out of employment for some time, and was a married man, asked" for work, and he was given the job. Mr. Collyer would willingly have paid Brown's entrance fee to the union had he known his cireumstancefe. Brown was engaged because Collyer was unable to get a suitable man. Hit Worship inflicted a penalty of 2Cs, with 20s witnesses' expends. CoJlyer, he said, should have consulted the employment book of the union again.
