A short time ago the company purchased the cargo steamer Vespasian, and equipped it with a system of geared tui bines, for the purpose of ascertaining if any economies could be made as regaids fuel, weight and hpace in comparison with the best types of recipiocating engines -which are used in cargo sreamers of low speed and great deadweight capacity. It it now repotted that a test has been made with the geared turbines on ,the measured mile at ordinary rates of sea travel, and that a decreased steam consumption of 15 per cent, was shown, as-com-pared with ieciprooating engines, aud equally gratityin? results were attained on ordinary sea voyages.
