LABOUR RULE IN AUSTRALIA.
The result of the municipal elections is significant. The defeat of the Labour candidates almost all along the line indicates that the opinion of the electors has undergone a change since the State Pn,"hamentary elections, and as these showed a falling-oft m the Labour strength as compared with the Federal elections last April, we have presented to us tho facb rhat tfco Labour wave i fc steadily receding. The fulling-off is in that unstable quantity known as tho "sympathetic vote. For one -eason o. another this is becoming in part, at least, disenchanted, and unless the Labour bossps 'are careful they will immediately estrange* the vote, which probably greatly surpasses what might be called t)u official Labour vote. Such instances of tyranny as the classification of Mr. Holman as a "traitor" because he decided tv stand by
the rights of the State, must arouse resentment in a people vowed to freedom ot speech. In a sense the municipal elections art the writing on tho wall, even allowing for the different franchise compared with the elections.— -Tho Sydney Mail.
