MIRAMAR AFFAIRS.

TRAMWAY MATTERS. ' Last night's meeting of the Miramar Borough Council wat- attended by tho Mayor (Mr. J. Brodie) and Councillors M'Lsod,i Bowi©, Bell, Richards, and Muir. A letter was received from t'he Gas Company, in reference to the widening of King's-rcad. After discussion the matter was referred to a, committee to report to next meeting of t'he council. Mr. S. Richardson, Tramways Engineer and Manager, informed the council that when he replied to a request to run the 5 p.m. Lambton-Seatoun and 5.26 Livnabton-Miramar cars as minimum fare cars he had stated that the question would be considered immediately the now system of running workers' cars came into operation. Then he was expecting early delivery of the iuiderg«ar for tho car bodies recently completed at New town, and he had been relying on those cars being available when the alterations in tho fares came into operation. The steamer Parkiana had the trucks on board and her loss had upset his expectations. It would probably be three months at least befor© any additional cars were available. The present car accommodation on the Kilbirnie line at 5. p.m. was now proving inadequate, and unfortunately there was no possibility of any improvement until the new cars were available. Any present attempt, therefore, to introduce the- minimum, fare, and thereby reduce the maximum number of passengers on cert?in cars, would, in his opinion, only jeopardise the sucoess of a system which, if properly inaugurated, should prove a boon to borough residents. Whila- he realised the justification of the complaints he coxild not recommend any alteration at present. H© strongly recommended the council not to make any alteration at present in tho running of junction, cars. He promk^d the erection of side route boards bearing the words "Miramar and Seatoun Junction" on cars not going beyond that point. The 10.46 p.m. Lambton-Mira-mar car was delayed at the Opera House for the convenience of Miramar people, and it was doubtful if a second car on Wednesdays and Saturdays would pay either council. As there was ground for complaint, be was prepared, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, to run tho 10.46 p.m. car showing Miramar destination to the city boundary only, and to run an. extra car from Lambton ab 10. 5 i p.m. This car would run right through to Miramar and pick up borough passengers on the- 10.46 car at the boundary. Should the 10.46 car got a full load of through passengers at any time, it could ' run right through. This was the best arrangement he cculd suggest at present to overcome- the difficulty. At the instance of Councillor Bowie, seconded by Councillor Muir, it was decided to refer the report to the Tramway Committee for further consideration. Accountf amounting to £1711 15s 10d ! were passed for payment. The credit ' balance en district fund account was ! reported to be £2109 18s 2d, and an improvement loan account £1495 2s Bd.
