AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
TRAINING IN CKRISTCHURCH. |>X THt,BQE.Vi>H — SPBCI.U, TO TIES TOST.] CHRISTCHUfiCH, This Day. Local amateur athletes are showing considerable activity in their p?ieparations for the New Zealand championships. A strong cenrtingent of middle-distance men is in active work, and Canterbury should give a very good account of itself in the half and one mile events. Dickson seems to be running much faster than usual, and his trainers are very confident that he will be successful in two events. He will be competing at Dunedin on Saturday. Haskins has been training very consistently o? late in company with Dougall arid Aitken. The two last named runners are putting in a kit o! steady to three-quarter pace work, but in the sprinting finishes Haskins aitpeiru to 'bo holding his own. Although not quite fit, there is little doubt that he will be a starter in the half-mile. Opie has been slightly indispoosd bince his race in Wanganui, and has only uecn on the track for two night. His spell seems in no way to have diminished his pace. He intends to visit Dunedin on Saturday, but probably he will not be called on to extend himself greatly, as Otago seems to be badly off for fast runners in the sprint events. For the walking event the Stubberfield Bros, are in good niek^ though th© younger brother doe 3 not seem able to foot it with the ex-cnaanpion. Tho advent of M'Holme, a, polico constame, is being looked forward to with mttch interest. His .periormances with the hammer are reported to be well above the average. Wright is showing good form over, the 440 yds and half-mile, and in a trial spin over the latter distance a few evenings ago he was timed to be doing very close to 2min.
