THE TURF. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Although St. Alwynne has had no high class performers to represent him in Australia, he has had a splendid advertisement in the Dominion in Lady Medallist, whose dam, Diploma, is a daughter of the New Zealand-bred Medallion, best known perhaps as the sire of Achilles, and Somniloquist, by Somnus — Blue and White (imported). Over a mile and a quarter she is no doubt the best performer in the Dominion, and her running in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, in which she beat Lob Angelos and Maori King, winner and runner-up in the Stead Memorial Cup, goes to show that had she been sent south to contest that event, the trophy would have adorned the Porirua sideboard. This season she won the principal event at in the Spring, the Wellington Spring Handicap, and W.R.C. Handicap, and put up what was her best performance in the Taranaki Cup, in which she carried 9st 111b, and ran a mile and a quarter in 2min 7 3-ssec. She wound up 'last season by winning at Blenheim with 9st 71b, and was fortunate this season to get in at Wanganui with Bst 81b, and more so at Trentham with Bst 111b and Bst 131b. When her racing days are over she will join the Elderslie stud matrons. The Tasmanian horsemen, Dunn and Jennings, who paid a visit to the Dominion a couple of seasons ago, are doing | well in Adams land. Dunn rode four •winners at Launoeston Cup meeting. Smilax scored his fifth successive win at Taranaki. Pie is top weight in the Victoria Hack Handicap at Woodville, and will have to carry lOst 101b in the event named. Lieutenant Soult is now trained at Caulfield. Gladiole scored her third win in open company at New Plymouth. She Was engaged in a five furlongs race at Woodville, but was allowed to drop out. Even with a penalty she should have had an excellent chance, as the opposition looks very moderate. - Mon Ami's mission to Taranald was unsuccessful. The Soult mare appears to have lost all form, and it is unlikely her owner will persevere with her much, longer. ______ Winchester, who scored his third win in hurdle events at Taranaki, and is a member of A. Atwood's Feilding tsam, I w"as a present to a well-known horseman from an Auckland admirer. His sire, St Crispin, has got a few winners in the Auckland district, but nothing in the same class as himself. St. Crispin won the Great Northern Derby, among other events, but never started in a jumping race. The Soult gelding Soultiform scored nis second win in the Timaru Hack Handicap at New Plymouth. He is entered on the second day at Woodville, but will probably not be there, as Hector Gray has to go to Dunedin to ride Byron. Soultiform is entered for the five furlongs races at Dannevirke, and as Gray's services are available he will probably make his next appearance there. Bourrasque and Flingot were not taken through to the Taranaki meeting. The hor3es named are to fulfil their engagements at Woodville next week. DANNEVIRKE WEIGHTS.
