AMATEURS AT THE BASIN. An. evening meeting undor the auspices of thu Civil Service Amateur bports Club was held at the Basin Reserve yesterday. A preliminary to the annual picnic of the Grocers' Union, in the shape of a sports meeting, was held at New town. ParJc yesterday. The sports were well attended. Three cups were competed for. The "Hunky Dory" Cup, presented by Messrs Bailie Willox, of Glasgow, went to the competitor scoring th« highest number of aggregate points in the whole of the events. The Maple Leaf Cup, presented by Messrs. J. B. MacEwan and Co., was awarded for tha highest number of aggregate points in. the foot races, and the Daphne Cup, presented by Messrs. Hull and Barton, tor the competitor securing most aggregate points m the cycling events. W. M'Ewan won all three foot races, and M. Forde came first in each of the three cycling events. The Daphne Cup was, therefore, awarded to Forde, and the Maple Leaf Cup to M'Ewan. As these competitors tied in the matter of aggregate points for the whole meeting, the "Hunky Dory" Cup will be retained by Forde, its present holder. Results of the various events wero :—: — Maiden race, 100yds.— J. Oliver, 1; J. Dowling, 2; W. S. Mouat, 3. Five started. Half-mile cycle handicap. — M. Forde (scr), 1; H. Alger (20yds), 2; E. Russell (30yds), 3. 100 yards handicap. — W. M Ewan (5 yards), 1; P. Baillio (3yds), 2; J. Dowling (9yds), 3. Nine started. One mile bicycle handicap. — M. Fordo (scr , 1; 11. Alger (40yds), 2; F. Roscoe (45yds), 3. 220 yards handicap.— W. M'Ewan (8 yards),' 1; W. G. Mouat (18yds), 2; C. Oliver (15vds), 3. One mile walk. — Three competitors started. R. Hayes finished alone. 440 yards handicap. — W. M'Ewaa (scr), 1; W. G. Mouat (35yds), 2; J. Rowberry (20yds), 3. Twelve started. This was the race of the d3,y. The limit man had a 40yds start, but M'Ewan, with a splendid finishing run, won by several yards. Two mile cycle race. — M. Forde (scr). 1; 11. Alger (95yds), 2; C. Russell (140 yards), 3. At the close of the programme a match was run off between W. M'Ewaa and J. Lynch, who carried off the running enets last year. The prize allotted was a trophy valued at £1 Is, and the distance agreed upon was 100 yds. From a good start Lynch led all the way, and won by a foot.
