EMPEROR OF CHINA.
• « A DINNER PARTY. The third birthday of the young Emperor of China, Hsuan-Tung, was celebrated by a dinner given by the Chinese Consul, Mr. Hwang, on Saturday evening. The following accepted invitations to be present : — Sir Joseph Ward, Hpn. Dr. Findlay, Hon. D. Buddo, Judge Chapman, Captain Maitland, Mr. T. Toung, Consul fof Japan, "Mr. A. de B. Brandon, Mr. G. E. Tolhurst, Mr. H. Beauehamp, Mr. C. Earle, Mr. C. Wheeler, Mr. J. F. Andrews secretary to Cabinet, Mr. A. H. Turnbull, ViceConsul for Spain; Sen. Bustamente, Consul for Uruguay; Dr. A. Martin, Consul for Chili; Mr. A. E. Pearce, Consul for Sweden; Mr. Eberhard Focke, VioeConsul of Germany ; Mr. J. F. Dyer, Vice- Consul for Greece; Mr. A. W. Newton, Consul of Norway ; Dr. A. W. Izard, Hon. Consul for Liberia; Mr. James Macintosh, ' Consular Agent for France , Mr. Mansfield, Registrar General; Mr. Charles H. Turner, Consular Agent for U.S.A. ; Mr. A. E. Kemot, Consul of Paraguay ; Mr. W. M. Wright, Government Statistician ; Mr. T. H. Shah, first secretary of the Chinese Consulate; Mr. C. T. Wong, second secretary of the Chinese Consulate. During the evening Mr, Hwang made reference to the respective hopes and aspirations of the Eastern and Western races, and voiced the hope of a better understanding of each other as the surest means of overcoming any racial prejudices that might exist. Sir Joseph Ward, in proposing Mr. Hwang's health, expressed the hope that the ChineseGovernment would permit him to continue to represent it for many years to come. He was sure the pleasant personal relations which existed between Mr. Hwang and those with whom he came into contact in this country would grow ttill stronger.
