' Further efforts to float the steamer Eastern, which is ashore on Salamander Bank, twenty- two miles north of Brisbane, have been unsuccessful. The vessel's position is becoming serious. The New Zealanders include Mr. and Mrs. L. Blundell. Mrs. Nelson and infant, Mr. A. E. Northi and Miss North. They were compelled to leave the bulk of their luggage oil board tbo stranded steamer, which lighters are unable to approach. The latest report states that the cargo is being jettisoned. The prospeots of floating the vessel are improving, though the sea. is still rough. j RUAHINE IN COLLISION. A WEEK'S DELAY FOR REPAIRS. LONDON, 28th January. The steamer Beacon Grange collided with the New Zealand Shipping Company's Ruahine, off Las Palmas, Canary Islands, and cut five feet into the latter above the waterlino. LONDON, 29th January. The Ruahine will bo detained a week at Las Palmas for repairs. [The Beacon Grange ia a vessel of 4237 tons, belonging to the Houißer Line. The Ruahine left London on the 21st inst. for Wellington, and was due here about sth March.] THE AOTEA. PREMIUM FOR REINSURANCE. LONDON, 28th January. Sixty-five per cent, is -being quoted on the cargo of the Aotea, which went ashore at Moulle Point, near Capetown. The vessel's upper 'tween deck cargo is being landed practically undamaged. The lower hold is full of water, but th© prospects of salvage are favourable. j THE COTTAGE CITY. MISSING" BOAT" PICKED UP. NEW YORK, 28th January.
