RELIEF FOR CHINESE.

• I DISPOSAL OF FAMINE FUND. Last evening a meeting of subscribers to -iji© fund for relief of Chinese who have been, randexed desfcitat-e by the terrible famine in the provinces of KiasagEu and Anhra was 1 held at the Chinese Cousalate, Burneai-aveaiute. The Bishop, of Weßiogfeon presided. It is estimated tiiat faily 2,500,000 people-are affected by the famine. Mr. Yung-Liang Hwang,, Consul, said that £214 8s had been received to date in New Zealand, the greater part being contributed in Wellington. It waa decided tJhat the sum of £5200 be cabled at once to~the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, to be handed to the Central China Famine Relief Committee for distribution. The meetfSng expressed a hope that the people of New Zealand would realise more keeply the terrible sufferings of the afflicted and starving Chinese, and make a. more adequate response to the appeal for aid. Of the total sum contributed, only £6f> 17s had been, subscribed by Europeans. The Consnl will be glad to receive any further donations and tC forward them to China from time to time.
