THEFT OF RIFLES.

A young man named Joseph Percivtd Kovell, who appeared to feel his position keenly, was brought before Mr. W. G. Eiddell, S.M., at tht Magistrate's Court this morning, to answer charges (1) that on the 24th January, at Wellington, ho committed theft of three rifles', valued at £11, the property of the New Zealand Government, and (2) that on the 18th January, at Karori, ho committed theft of a white tunic, a cap, a pair of trousers, and a belt, valued at £3, the property of the Now Zealand Government. Defendant, who was .arrested last night by Detective Cassells, is a member of the Territorial Forces, and pleaded guilty to both charges. The rifles are said to have been stolen from the orderly room of the Wellington Guards at the Buckle-street Drill Hall. Chief-Defcectivo Broberg asked for a remand of accused for sentence till Monday next, pending further enquiries about the young man. This was granted. ' "
