THE OLD TURBINE.

"IDLE FOR MANY MONTHS. During the discussion on the hospital lighting problem at the City Conncil last evening, references were made to the possibility of purchasing another Parsons turbine, the present one having greatly reduced the working expenses ill the production of electric power. Later in the evening, Councillor Carmichael asked a question concerning the position of the other one, which, had been damaged and was being repaired. The Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P.) : It is not back yet. Councillor Carmichael : Then we don't require another turbine. The Mayor : The question of getting the extra turbine will arise if the council decides to scrap the old machinery and buy one for future growth. Councillor "Carmichael : In connection with the old machinery, how much has been sold ? What is the reason for it, and for how much, less was it sold than what we gave for it? The Mayor : I've no idea, but I will find out for you. The councillor was also to be informed of the cost of repairing the damaged turbine. > The turbine to which Councillor Carmichael referred is the Curtis turbine, installed in 1807 in the old lighting station. Certain defects appeared in the alternating dynamo, which was subsequently sent to the United States for repairs and alterations. Nothing has been heard of it recently, but intimation of its shipment from New York may come at any time. The turbine is also to be improved, and its power increased from about 700 to 1000 horse-power. The Test of the plant, reciprocating engines, and dynamos, has to be maintained as a stand-by in case of a breakdown in the Parsons machine. Should another turbine be purchased, there will be ample reserve, and tho old machinery can be relegated to the second-hand dealer.
