SWIMMING.
THE SWIFTS CLUB. To-morrow afternoon, at the Swifts Swimming Club's carnival, to be held in Te Aro Baths, the first Flying Squadron race for possession of tho Walker aud Hall Cup will take place. The cup is at present on view in Mr. T. Shields's shop in Willis-street. The three clubs have selected the following swimmers to do battle for them : — Swifts — Freyberg, Fordham, Capper, Smith, Paterson ; reserve, G. Jenkinson. Thorndon — Healy, Brice, Roberts, Nelson, Rnnayne ; reserve, Picot. Wellington — Stranger, O'Neill, Murrell, Mawby, Wilson; reserve, Stratford. Each' man has to swim 100 yards, making a total distance for each team of 500 yards. In Sydney the Flying Squadron race has for years past been the most popular event at swimming galas, and " similar competitions hero promises to be highly successful. Each of the smaller local swimming clubs, whose ambitions do not yet soar as hii|h as the inter-club championship, will have tennis in the 200 yds handicap rolay race, V.M.C.A., Victoria College, and Worser Bay having entered teams for Jiifi event, for which an entry of nine teams has been received.
In order to give the centre selectors an opportunity of sorting out representatives for the coming water polo championship, a game between Wellington A and B teams will be played at the carnival. The handicap events will bo contested by big fields, while novelty itoms, afternoon tea dispensed by the Swifts lady members, and music by the Tramways Band will assist towards the enjoyment of spectators. Three of the heats in connection with the 50yds handicap to bo decided at> to-morrow's carnival were got off last evening. The results were :—: — , First heat : L. Blundell, ssec, 1 : J. Jenkinson 3sec. Time,, 33 1-5 sec. Tlig remaining heats will be decided this evening.
