CARPENTERS' DISPUTE.
FINALITY NOT YET REACHED. No final settlement has yet been, arrived at by the Conciliation. Council in reference to the dispute between the Wellington branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, and the builders, and other employers concerned, in the district. Considerable argument, extending over two and a half days, has already been heard by the council, which sat at the Supreme Court again yesterday. The sitting was confined to a discussion of the demands of the men in reference to the questions of hours, wages, and preference. Difficulty was, in particular, experienced by the council in attempting to fix the rate of wages. When the conference Tose, it is said that the difference between the men's demands in this respect and the scale of wages advanced by the employers, did not exceed a half-penny per hour. The council, which is presided over by Mr. P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, adjourned until 7th February, there being hopes of a final and definite settlement being arrived at in the meantime.
