E XTRA EDITION. MACHINE PRINTERS' DISPUTE.
» [BT TELEGEAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH. 24th January. The , dispute between the Canterbury printers and machinists was before the Conciliation 'Commissioner to-day. The union demanded a forty-eight houi's' week. This has been conceded but the proposal that journeymen ' be paid £3 5s (reduced to Wellington rates) and the proposal that the award should recognise only journeymen and apprentices threatened to end the proceedings, as the employers refused to accept classification or consider ether conditions until the clause was withdrawn. They were finally prevailed on to postpone consideration Gf the matter and other demands. The union waj persuaded to reduce its demand for holidays to eight days. No agreement has been come to yet regarding the proportion of apprentices, employment of feeders, or period of the award.
