CONTROL OF CRETE. APPEAL TO PRESIDENT TAFT. PROTEST AGAINST TURKISH OPPRESSION.
A REVOLUTION PREDICTED. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received January' 24, 8.55 a.m.) NEW YORK, 23rd January. The Greeks resident in New York will hold a mass meeting to protest against the oppression of Cretans by the Ottoman Lmpire, and to ask President Tafi to notify the Powers to prevent Turkish tyranny. They predict that a revolution will take place that will cost Turkey millions. Speaking last month in the Turkish Chamber of Deputies, the Grand Vizier, Hakfii Pasha, said the Porte's relations with Greece had been somewhat disturbed on account of the conduct of the Hellenic Government, which aroused the suspicion that Greece wished to in. tervene in tho affairs of Crete, which I only concerned Turkey and the protecting Powers. It was hoped that the future conduct of Greece would dispel these suspicions. The Cretan' situation, the Vizier declared, was unchanged. ] | The Powers still considered that the time for a definite solution had not arrived. In the Cretan Chamber a week later a vote of confidence in the Cretan Government was passed by a large majority. The composition of the Cretan Government, it is stated, permits hope of a more pacific foreign policy than that declared by the Opposition, which preaches resistance oven to the counsels of the protecting Powers in the event of union with Greece not being accomplished.
