The second wool sale of tho series was held to-day. The total number of bales offered was 13,738, of which 3195 wore passod. The greater part of the withdrawn lots were station clipb, which the owners expressed their determination to consign to London rather than accept tho reduced prices, oifored hero. 'Tho usual buyers were present, with the exception that Americans wore not ropro&enied. Southland buyers entered largely into competition, and wero actively concerned in maintaining a better price than would have otherwise been current. Crossbred wool tormed the greater part of the catalogues, and with an averago drop of a penny per lb, as compared with last month, growers had to be content with about 3d per lb less Chan iv January of last year. Lack of American competition had a decided bearing on these resuHs, moi'o particularly in regard to hogget wool. At no time was competition very animated, oxcept for tho better lots. Btillies and pieces, which were a feature of last month's Balo, dropped quite 2d per lb. Hogget wool averaged B|d to 9£d : extra good, up to lid. Ewe wool averaged 7ijd to BJd, a lew lots up to 10i, with inferior ranging down to sd. Inferior wools suffered the greatest drop. Of tho finer grade wools, Murray, Robei'ts and Co. purchased a fair quantity for Dominion rminufactuio. As against the top prieo of 13sd last January, ll£d was the best prieo to-day.
