COMMENT BY A NEWSPAPER. A CASE BEFORE THE CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
Before commencing the proceedings at the Conciliation Council this morning, one of the repiesentatives of the Carpenters and Joiners' Union, Mr. J. Barras, stated that he had been instructed by his union to bring before the council the matter of the Dominion newspaper making comment in the shape of a leading article upon some of the business still engaging the attention of the council. He referred to and read the paper's comments respecting the utterance of the Commissioner (Mr. P. Hally), having reference to the claims for wages and hours, and said ho considered it unfair that the newspaper should have commented in the manner it had. After some discussion, it was agreed by a majority of the council present that the matter should be referred to the Labour Department by 'etter, asking it to take the necessary steps to rectify the occurrence. The representatives of the employees voted on one side, ihe employers' deputies on the other, and the court decided the matter by voting with the former. On Friday last, when the dispute was first heard, Mr. Hally said he considered that the claims of the_ union for a week of 40 hours and an increase of wages from Is 4d to Is 8d per hour wera unreasonable.
