The Padmerston North Boxing Clubi, a young institution, held its first tournar tnernt »t the Opera House last night, when the attendance was large, and tho proceeds will considerably augment the funds iii aid of fitting up the club's gymnasium. One of the best series- of contests ever witnessed here was given, and the big crowd got wildly enthusiastic, pairticiuao-ly over the fine display of a youthful boxer named Trewoek, who deteated H. Tracy, of Wellington, after a brilliantly-fought contest, during which Tracy narrowly] missed being knocked out. Another good match was between F. Ellis, of Wellington, the New Zealand bantam champion, and W. Shields, runner-up in the Australasian featherweight championship. Things were very lively, particularly towards the end of the contest, and tho last round was a punishing one, both m-aa boxing themselves to a standstill. Ifc was a close thing, and, though Ellis wae declared the winner, it looked like a draw. The other contests resulted :— Lightweight : D. Moxon beat P. Brown. Welter : A. Dalzell (Tokonwu) beat B. Childs. Middleweight : Clifford (WeiHngton) beat W. Waters (Palmerston North). Heavyweight : J. Sullivan (vVestraha) beat A. Olliver (Oroua Bridge).
