SHOCKING TREATMENT OF SHEEP.
PROCEEDINGS TO BE TAKEN. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. An act of cruelty to some ewes was noticeable at last Wednesday's Addington market, stated Mr. W. H. Zouch, in his report at the meeting of the Society for the Prevention of- Cruelty t o Animals last evening. A pen of eleven ewes and lambs were offered and sold in a condition in which no animals should on any account be allowed to be entered for sale. No fewer than six of these ewes with lambs had patches of wool varying from four to fifteen inches torn off. exposing the baro flesh on their backs and bides. In one instance the animal's body was so torn that a portion of its entrails was nearly touching the ground. With the aid of Constable Donovan, particulars of the case had been obtained, and the maiter was now under consideration with a. view to taking proceedings against the responsible party. Mr. Zouch had had the animals photographed, but before this was done all the animals had been removed to a grass paddock, and their sale cancelled. The report of the inspector was received.
