FREE MIDWIFERY TRAINING.

The following circular has been issued by the" Department of Hospitals and Charitable Aid to the boards throughout New Zealand :—: — "It has been decided to accept two pupils each term for free midwifery training in each of the St. Helens hospitals. These pupils are for the country districts, and must be selected or specially recommended by the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board" of the distriot. The board must be satisfied that there is need in the district, or the special part of the district, for a trained widwife; that she is one who would not be able otherwise to obtain her training owing 10 lack of means; that she is a respectable woman, and sufficiently well educated to benefit by the training and pass the examination under the Midwives Act ; that she is willing, to work for two years after completing her training in the part of the hospital district which is approved by the board (she must sign an agreement with the board to this effect). She could, if not on the register of trained nurses, be between the ages of twenty-five and forty. The name 'of the applicant and the recommendation must then be forwarded to the InspectorGeneral of Hospitals, who will, if approved, obtain the authorisation of the Minister in charge of Hospitals to give a vacancy for training in one of the St. Helens hospitals without charge. It will, be necessary, then, for the applicant to await a vacancy, and to pass the ordinary month of probation in the hospital before being; finally accepted for training. It muse be understood that/ even after the paßsing of the first month of probation, a pupil may, if found unsuitable, be discharged without completing training."
