BILLIARD ROOMS.
POWER TO REFUSE LICENSES. Considerable extension of the present powers of municipalities in dealing with billiard-rooms was sought in a remit moved at the Municipal Conference today by Mr. Houldsworth (Grey Lynn) as follows : — "That the power in section 345 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1908, to make bylaws denning licensing and controlling billiard-rooms be extended to include power to refuse licenses to such rooms or to the keepers thereof who may not be desirable persons for such positions." Several speakers urged that the right to refuse or grant a license should be in the hands of borough councils. An Auckland delegate said he had known of petitions signed by citizens of all classes in the locality against the establishment by certain persons of billiard-rooms. A man who applied for a second-hand dealer's license had to submit his claims to scrutiny. The same should be the case with billiardroom-keepers. The motion was carried.
A Press Association telegram states that Mr. Noble, Reefton, has been appointed for a year as handicapper to the West Coast racing clubs. The position carries a salary of 200 guineas a year. Similarity in the name of the D.S.C. (of Auckland) to the D.I.C. so well known at Wellington, Chriptchurch, and Dunedin, has led to an impression mi some quarters that th^re- is or liadi been, some connection between tho two institutions. We are asked, to state, however. \ii;'t at no time has there been any <-„. v .».. •whatever between the D.S.C. oi Auckland and the D.I.C. of Wellington. Christchurch, and Dunedin. When the D.I.C. 1 started in Dunedin some 27 years ago, the contraction of the D. G. and I. Co., Ltd., quickly became popularised into "D.1.C," and the promoters of the company promptly saw the advantage and registered the name "D.1.C." Names not unlike D.I.C. became rather a vogue, hence tome misconception which/ ne are nw asked to remove..
